Mining-Impacted Communities To Become Full Participants in EITI Process

EcoLur's project entitled 'Mining-Impacted Communities – Full Participants in EITI Process' has been launched: the aim of this project is to support the active society and local NGOs in mining-impacted communities in Syunik, Lori and Gegharkounik Regions in becoming full participants in the Armenian processes of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to make mining sector a transparent and accountable one and to support the protection of their rights in this process. Within the frames of this project, the residents of the impacted communities and local NGOs will familiarize themselves with the EITI processes happening in Armenia, their opinions and proposals will be gathered on the accountability and detected of data related to 'Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine' CJSC, 'Agarak Copper and Molybdenum Combine' CJSC (GeoProMining), 'Teghout' CJSC/ 'VTB – Armenia' CJSC, '' GeoProMiningGold' LLC, 'Akhtala Ore-Dressing Combine' CJSC, 'Kapan Ore Dressing Combine' CJSC.

On 20 February, the working group of the project discussed the information package on the EITI process to be presented in the communities, the questionnaire of the sociological survey designed to examine the social and environmental impact of mining in the communities, awareness-raising leaflets to be disseminated in the communities and the upcoming visits were planned.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is a global Standard to promote the open and accountable management of natural resources, which membership includes 51 countries (As of 01.01.2019).

The objective of the EITI is the establishment of more transparent and accountable state and business systems, as well as the promotion of a public dialogue thus guaranteeing the mutual understanding among the parties. In March 2017, Armenia became a candidate country of the EITI.

'Mining-Impacted Communities – Full Participants in EITI Process' project is implemented with the USAID support within the frames of 'Engaged Citizenry for Responsible Governance' project implemented by Transparency International Anticorruption Center.
