"Akhtala Ore Processing Combine" CJSC is once again trying to raise the dam of Nahatak tailing dump operating in the village of Mets Ayrum: locals are against it. They blocked the road leading to the tailing dump. Oleg Dulgaryan, President of Community Mobilization and Support Center NGO, posted about this on his Facebook page on May 13.
"At the moment, the residents of Mets Ayrum village have again had to block the road leading to Nahatak tailing dump not allowing the movement of Akhtala OPC trucks. Akhtala OPC wants to raise the dam of the tailing dumo, which is opposed by the villagers, as the dam is being built without an approved project, while the tailing dump should have been rehabilitated long ago, and the villagers are against the illegal ascent and further operation. They demand to reclaim the tailing dump as soon as possible. Several days ago Czech environmental public organization “Arnika”, “Center for Community Mobilization and Support” NGO (Alaverdi, Armenia) and “EcoLur” Informational NGO (Yerevan, Armenia) addressed David R. Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment and Baskut Tuncak, Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes with a letter on the situation in northern Armenia presented the current situation with Nahatak Tailing Dump and health and environmental problems in Mets Ayrum Village,” Oleg Dulgaryan posted.
