Yerevan Municipality Responded to Statement Made by Residents and NGOs against Spandaryan Basalt Mining

The residents of Yerevan and a number of non-governmental organizations addressed a letter to RA Environment Minister Romanos Petrosyan and Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan with a demand to reject Spandaryan basalt mining development project Statement of Society against Spandaryan Basalt Mining Project in Yerevan.

In its reply letter, Yerevan Municipality informs that the current city authorities have rejected all applications for the development of new mines during their tenure, and have initiated an environmental impact assessment of the existing abandoned mines.

"22 non-metallic mines are exploited in Yerevan. In recent years, the maximum allowable dust concentration (MPC) in Yerevan has often been significantly (several times) exceeded. At the same time, despite the apparent significant pollution near the existing mines, there are no monitoring data available.

In view of the above, as well as all the negative opinions of the population and the professional community on mining projects in the city, all applications for the developments of new mines were rejected on behalf of the community during the tenure of the current city authorities.

Currently, Yerevan Municipality has initiated an environmental impact assessment study of the existing abandoned mines in order to find out the current ecological situation following the development of the mines in Yerevan City," the letter says.
