The area of new power unit is considered a seismically active zone: this is what the explanation given by the State Committee on Regulation of Nuclear Safety says in the government.
Taking into consideration the seismic hazard the area is characterized by a number of features. According to the safety standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, special criteria of expected ground motion as a result of seismic activity should be worked out and applied for the projection of a new nuclear power plant.
Upon the proposal of the State Committee on Regulation of Nuclear Safety, the draft decision “On Approving Assessment Methodology of Seismic Hazard of Area for Construction of New Nuclear Power Unit” was introduced as an item on the agenda of the Armenian government meeting to be held on 13 December.
