Nature Protection Ministry has “forgotten” about governmental decision N 836 dated on 23 July 2009 in regard with uranium prospecting and mining stating that there is no uranium in Tashtoun and Litchq Tey mines. This is what Nature Protection Ministry response says, which is addressed to Meghri Mayor. Reminder: Meghri residents have appealed the top officials in regard with the serous poor ecological situation in Meghri area caused by the impact of mining wastes. Besides, they focused that works are actively conducted in the places where the Soviet expeditions searched for uranium. In its response Nature Protection Ministry, in its turn, makes a reference to the Institute of Geology of NAS RA, which expressed its opinion that, “…socio-economic development of Syunik is connected with mining industry. Mining volumes are increasing per year which poses serious risks for human health and environment. Besides, the tailing dump can pose essential threats for high seismicity and landslip processes,” the letter says. What about high concentration of uranium and thorium in Tashtoun, Litchqvaz-Tey and Litchq mentioned on “Map for Ore Demonstrations Containing Uranium”, the institute thinks this doesn’t comply with the reality.
It should be mentioned in Armenia nobody is entitled to conduct prospecting of uranium and thorium reserves, except “Armenian-Russian Mining Organization” CJSC. The Armenian Government has provided ‘uranium’ monopoly to this organization supported by “Rusatom” State Corporation fixed by governmental decision N 234 dated on 6 March 2008.” So far the organization has been dealing with uranium prospecting only in the area of Lernadzor Village. Information about the presence of uranium near Lernadzor is contradicting. Energy Minister stated there is no uranium in the zone of studies, while the official reports of the organization required by MPS say there is uranium.
