Serzh Sargsyan Qualifed Ilham Aliyev’s Allegation as Lie

On March 24 and 25 Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made a speech at the plenary session at the Third Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague, where he particularly sad that due to the continuing occupation of 20 per cent of the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan and the policy of ethnic cleansing carried out against Azerbaijanis, the country has no ability to control part of its borders properly. This situation creates conditions for transnational organized crime, illegal transportation of nuclear and radioactive materials, as well as contamination by Armenia of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan through the disposal of radioactive waste.

Then the President of Azerbaijan, speaking about the dangers posed by the obsolete nuclear power plant in Armenia built almost 40 years ago, emphasized that the NPP is a big threat to the entire region and the nearest neighbours. The consequences of any accident at it will be tragic. But instead of eliminating international concern and closing the power plant, Armenia adopted a decision to continue operating the nuclear power plant until 2026 despite the fact that it is located in a highly-seismic zone and is based on an outdated and extremely dangerous technology, as www.day.az website informs. In reply to this statement the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan addressed this issue in this speech:

“Today the president of Azerbaijan raised the issue of the safety of the Armenian Metsamor nuclear power plant. I would like to note that we closely cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in ensuring the safety of Armenian nuclear power plant via consistent implementation of the requirements set by the Agency’s technical document 640. The results of the OSART mission attest to that. What refers to the voiced rumors as if we have had troubles related to radioactive waste, such a lie is first and foremost a demonstration of non-confidence towards international structures, since we coordinate all our programs with the IAEA,” Sargsyan said.
