In 2017 the lifetime extension works of the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant will continue. According to Artem Petrosyan, Head of Nuclear Energy Department of RA Ministry for Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources, in 2017 it's planned to carry out projecting of modernization of power unit equipment, systems and buildings, estimated justification of residual reserves of equipment, measures aimed at increasing radiation safety level. As a result, the project of modernization of second power unit equipment and systems will be developed, as well as the opportunity of further development of non-replaceable and non-renewable equipment will be substantiated.
According to Artem Petrosyan, the first stage of power unit lifetime extension works designed for 2016 have been accomplished. Over 4500 units of equipment, systems and components have been examined, which resulted in confirming the possibility of extending second power unit lifetime with the set terms.
The inspections carried out within the frames of second power unit lifetime extension of the ANPP didn't reveal any drawback that would hinder the lifetime extension of reactors for 10 years, as the Ministry for Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources informs.
Reminder: the second power unit should be taken out of use in 2026, while the lifetime of this power unit expired in 2016. Nevertheless, taking into consideration risks of serious lack of basic capacities to arise from the closedown of the nuclear power plant, a decision was reached to extend the operation of the second power unit by 10 years. For this purpose, Russia allotted a loan of 270 million USD and a grant of 30 million USD to Armenia.
