The program is implemented within the frames of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Yerevan Municipality, “ISSD” Innovative Solutions For Sustainable Development of Communities” NGO and “Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia”.
“Waste sorting is important not only for Yerevan but for the whole republic as this way the environment pollution is significantly reduced”, stressed the head of Yerevan Municipality Department of Nature protection Gevorg Nazaryan.
The co-founder and president of “ISSD Innovative Solutions For Sustainable Development of Communities” NGO Mkhitar Avetisyan informed that the program also involves trainings. A manual has been worked out for pupils of the 6th form. The project also includes a number of events aimed at awareness increase of teachers and pupils referring to sustainable waste management.
The aim of the program is to improve the systems of waste management. More than 200 waste containers have been placed in schools. The organizers of the program believe that with their actions they will be able to instill the culture of waste sorting and recycling in society.
Yerevan Municipality has been taking actions in waste sorting for 2 years. Numerous containers for glass, plastic, paper have been placed throughout the city.
Pupils of “Vardanants knights” school N 106 have been engaged in waste sorting for about 10 years. They said that they sold their paper waste and buy items or do work necessary for the school. They even were able to do some renovations.
To make the initiative more interesting for pupils the schools which will collect most waste will get encouraging rewards, as informs the Yerevan Municipality website.
