Yerevan City intends to give a new status to Hrazdan gorge. It is not yet known what that status will be, but as Yerevan Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan thinks, it should be achieved through legislative amendments. Yerevan Mayor mentioned this in the video made by the municipality. "The gorge should have a special status so that after its adoption, there will be no possibility for restaurants to operate in Hrazdan gorge, which shall be completely banned," he said.
Due to the current activities of many food outlets and restaurants in Hrazdan Gorge, the gorge is facing serious environmental problems, and the most serious one is the pollution of the Hrazdan River with household waste. According to Grigor Nazaryan, Head of Department of Nature Protection of Yerevan Municipality, a 2021 survey of Veolia Water Company revealed that about 0.5 million cubic meters of wastewater is discharged into the Hrazdan River from over 22,000 points.
Not only the river water but also the atmospheric air is polluted by the objects operating in the area of the gorge. According to Andranik Sedoyan, Deputy Head of tSpecial Regulatory Programs for Urban Development Activities of Yerevan Municipality, there is smoke and polluted environment near Hrazdan gorge, which is due to the operation of various facilities located in the gorge.
The video mentions that the process of giving a special status to the gorge should be followed by the general inventory of the gorge, then the area will be mapped, and a plan will be developed.
