The water in Araks River is not sufficient to construct Meghri HPP with 130 MW capacity: the reason is the construction of reservoirs on the Araks River by Turkey, as Energy and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Hayk Harutyunyan said in his interview with EcoLur.
Reminder: together with Islamic Republic of Iran still in 2012 should have commenced the construction of Meghri HPP with 130 MW projected capacity and annual production of 800 million kW/h electricity.
“The technical and economic rationale of Meghi HPP was submitted still in 2000, but much has changed so far mainly in regard with change in water amounts. The change is connected with the construction of reservoirs by our neighbor Turkey. The Iranians now tell us that their estimates show that the water amount in Araks River is not sufficient to construct a plant with 130 MW capacity and new studies are needed. The preliminary estimates show this water will be sufficient to construct a plant with 100 MW capacity,” Hayk Harutyunyan said and added that the new studies will show the capacity of the plant to be constructed on the Araks River.
“Now the studies are in progress to find out the capacity of the plant and the amount of the water in the river in order not to spend additional funds for turbines, generators and infrastructures,” Energy and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Hayk Harutyunyan said.
