On May 10 and 11 “deep pruning” of poplars was in progress in the territory of Yerevan State Finance and Economy College located in Babajanyan street, Avan area. Out of 30-35-meter-long poplars five-meter-long stubs have remained, which, under Yerevan Municipality, is called rejunevation of poplars. Acting Director of the college Ruben Araqelyan and Deputy Director Henrik Petrosyan said that the poplars posed danger for the surroundings. They showed EcoLur the college director’s letter addressed to Yerevan Municipality Environmental Department Head Avet Martirosyan. The letter said that one of the poplars was shaking and it may fall over and cause damage to the buildings and students. “…To avoid any further troubles I’m asking for your permission to cut down the dry tree and to prune the others,” College Director V. Minasyan’s letter says. In reply Yerevan Municipality Environmental Department Head Avet Martirosyan informed in writing, “…We have applied to Avan administrative area head to give assignment to the proper department for the rejuvenation of poplars in the yard and for the decorative design of other trees.”
It should be noted that the specialists from Botany Institute of NAS RA warned many times that deep cutting makes trees weaker, as it raises risks for infections.
