On 19 December the Armenian Government decided to submit “Complex Program for Recovery of Trout Reserves and Fish Breeding in Lake Sevan” for environmental expertise and independent economic expertise. The executive also made a decision to establish a Fund for Recovery of Sevan Trout Reserves and Fish Breeding Development.
The strategic goal of “Complex Program for Recovery of Trout Reserves and Fish Breeding in Lake Sevan” is the recovery of the trout reserves in Lake Sevan and solution to Sevan issues.
Under the project, the ways to achieve the goal is to organize the environmentally-friendly production of around 50,000 tons of endemic fish species in Lake Sevan by 2023 and development of a thorough chain, establishing conditions for natural reproduction, enhancing Lake Sevan Fund, allotting funds for the solution to Sevan issues.
The Public Environmental Alliance opposes to this project, as it thinks that Lake Sevan will turn into a large fish farm, while the artificial forage designed for the fish will pollute the lake. The Alliance has decided to address a letter to the factions of the National Assembly and to the Armenian Government demanding to stop the project aimed to destroy Lake Sevan.
