Women's Role in Energy - Actual Topic for Armenia

EcoLur

On 8 June a round table was held on 'Women's Role in Energy' at EcoLur Press Club. The cornerstone of the discussions was the issue 'Whether women can play a role in the sustainable development of energy, a sector which is conventionally 'man-oriented' and what this role shall be?' Whether there are features of gender approach to the problems and issues in energy? Yes, there are! Women are direct stakeholders, while in some cases they are a vulnerable social group. Women's employment in energetic sector is minimum, particularly in administration. The treatment to women-specialists in the energy sector doesn't make most participants of the discussion happy, but not all – some of the participants said no complaints were addressed to them as specialists. The initiator of the round table was Nune Sakanyan, a PFP graduate, the Professional Fellows Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This initiative was supported by Diana Harutyunyan, the UN Climate Change Programme Coordinator and Inga Zarafyan, President of 'EcoLur' NGO. The Club hosted Veronica Rocha from 'Women in Renewable Energy' (WiRE) located in Hawaii State (US), who presented the international experience of similar organizations, opportunities and privileges of their operations, as well as the problems of clean energy development and women's role in the sustainable energy development. The organization supports women in trainings, participation in seminars and scientific conferences. The main objective is to ensure sustainable and prosperous future for the State of Hawaii. Presenting the international experience of similar organizations, opportunities and privileges of their operations, as well as the problems of clean energy development and women's role in the sustainable energy development, Nune Sakanyan, as well as the participants to the round table, reached an agreement on the need to establish a similar organization in Armenia, the operation of which will be directed at the motivation and unification of women in this field, granting an opportunity to new specialists to expand their knowledge in the sector of energy, training with the professionals, in short, establishing a platform for the participation in the sectorial development and exchange of experience.
