Lake Sevan Level Started Increasing but Lake Sevan Lower by 22 Cm as of Last Year's Level For Same Day

Lake Sevan has started to rise, but the level of the lake is 22 cm lower than the same day last year. As of April 19 2022, the level of Lake Sevan is 1900.48 m, and on the same day last year the level of the lake made up 1900.70 m. In 2022, Lake Sevan greeted with a negative balance at the level of 1900.43 m. In January 2022, the level of the lake decreased, reaching 1900.39 m at the end of the month, and 1900.38 m at the end of February. From the beginning of March, the level of the lake started to rise, until the end of the month it reached 1900.45 m.

The decline in the level of Lake Sevan is influenced by the additional discharges from the lake for irrigation and climate change. For years, the Arpa-Sevan Tunnel, built to restore the level of Lake Sevan, has not been fully operational. 48.3-kilometer-long tunnel is designed to divert part of the Arpa and Yeghegis River flows through Kechut Reservoir to a total of 250 million cubic meters of water per year. However, after many years of renovation, Arpa-Sevan tunnel became fully operational in 2020. According to the data of the end of 2019, 158.636 million cubic meters of water flowed into Lake Sevan, 204.475 million cubic meters in 2020 and 156.675 million cubic meters in 2021. This year, another 43.187 million cubic meters of water has flowed into the lake through Arpa-Sevan tunnel.

In order to transfer the maximum amount of water to Lake Sevan, to gradually raise the level of Lake Sevan, the Government of the Republic of Armenia has decided to equip and modernize the tunnel hydropower plants, Kechut Reservoir, Yeghegis hydroelectric valves and metering points, Arpa-Sevan tunnel.
