The kick-off workshop of UNDP-GEF project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High-Value Ecosystems in Lake Sevan Basin for Multiple Benefits" was held at the UN office on March 15, 2024. The five-year program will be implemented in 2024-2028 with a grant budget of 3,598,631 USD funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to be implemented by The Environmental project implementation unit of the Republic of Armenia (RA) Ministry of Environment (acting as an Implementing Partner) and the World Wildlife Fund Armenian (WWF-Armenia acting as a Responsible Party).
This 5-year project capturing years 2024 to 2028 will cover Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor marzes/regions where Martuni, Vardenis, Shoghakat, Yeghegis, Vayk, and Jermuk communities are the project demonstration sites. The project will address concerns of biodiversity protection and land degradation reduction in landscapes of the Lake Sevan Basin, utilizing sustainable agriculture and land management methods, as such the project will focus on addressing direct drivers of biodiversity losses.
The project plans to strengthen the management capabilities of "Sevan" National Park and restore 2,200 ha of degraded forest land in coordination with the State Forestry Committee.
