Lake Sevan is experiencing serious risks, as the active civil society of Gegharkounik is beating an alarm signal: on 29 November “Community Council of Martuni Women” NGO organized discussions entitled “Environmental Risks of Gegharkounik Region”, where the public sector raised the problems and risks jeopardizing Lake Sevan.
“Already 270 million cum water has been let out of Lake Sevan instead of 170 million cum. As a result, the level of Lake Sean has decreased by 5 cm.” Referring to Lake Sevan trout reserves recovery and fish breeding complex program Inga Zarafyan outlined that this project is not environmental, as it will result to having 50,000 tons of artificial forage containing GMO, nitrogen and phosphorus, died and ill fish let out of cage nets, modification of natural trout genofond, drastic deterioration in water quality and blockade of Lake Sevan for littoral communities.”
“Blejan” NGO Chiarman Lianna Asoyan said, “Argitchi SHPP is one of the worst projects, as no such a project exists, where a SHPP pipes 12 km of the river. In this 12 km of riverbed we have a large ecosystem, where we can meet red-listed animal and plant species and people inhabiting there. According to my calculations, the SHPP pipe has already spilled 5 times flooding the villagers’ land areas, but the official figures account for three.”
