Industrial whitefish hunting has been banned in Lake Sevan since December 1 due to the whitefish spawning season. 300 tons of whitefish were planned to be caught from Lake Sevan within the framework of the experimental program of whitefish industrial fishing developed by RA Environment Ministry in the fall of 2020 until November 30. Summing up "seasonal experimental whitefish fishing in Lake Sevan", the ministry informs that 255 contracts were signed to catch about 236 tons of fish. About 204 tons of fish were caught during the whole fishing season. 25 entry points were set up and equipped for fishing, but the entry into the lake was established from 19 points.
"Environment Minister Romanos Petrosyan has given clear instructions to the administration of “Sevan” National Park to organize meetings-discussions with the residents of the fishermen and the coastal communities, so that the end of the industrial hunting season does not lead to any social problem in the region." All the concerns of our compatriots will be taken into account, discussions will be organized in the relevant subdivisions of the ministry in order to find their solutions.
"These regulations have the important u to rehabilitate Lake Sevan ecosystem through the restoration of fish stocks, thereby preventing the activation of blue-green algae," the Environment Ministry said in its statement.
It should be noted that so far no official estimate has been carried out how much whitefish has been caught from Lake Sevan since the beginning of 2020. The social impact of this pilot project, when one whitefish is sold on the streets at over 80 AMD, has not been studied. The question is how the implementation of this program should contribute to the restoration of the lake fish stocks, when the fish mother staff has been caught.
