As environmentalist Inga Zarafyan, President of "Ecolur" NGO, noted in her conversation with Shabat.am, in the last few years we have not noticed a positive balance in Lake Sevan, which is actually a mandatory requirement for the lake's ecosystem.
"The fact that the level of the lake is lower this year than last year indicates that the lake is in a very bad condition and is unable to restore the resources and conditions necessary for its survival. We have several obstacles for raising the level of Sevan. one is that the lake is surrounded by a ring of buildings, which are built below the 1,905-meter mark," the specialist noted.
According to the latter, there should be a political will to abandon such buildings that prevent the level of Lake Sevan from rising. She says that this will was often shown, but it remained fruitless, because there were pressures from both financial and influential people.
Zarafyan emphasizes that we often consider Lake Sevan as a reservoir, but it is not a reservoir. "Perhaps, the fact remains that if the lake did not have recovery mechanisms, it would die. We also have a problem with the presence of algae, as we have already mentioned, about its possible danger."
