This morning, EcoLur received an alarm signal that the Nubarashen landfill site is once again on fire. Fires frequently break out at this site - only a month ago, the landfill was burning as well. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan has stated that the immediate conservation of the Nubarashen landfill site is a top priority for the municipality.
It should be noted that the construction of a new sanitary landfill remains uncertain. Yerevan Solid Waste Management Program-which was launched years ago to close the Nubarashen landfill site and build a new, modern landfill in the adjacent area meeting international standards-has been canceled. According to the mayor, discussions are currently underway with the World Bank regarding the implementation of a new program, though no further details have been disclosed.
The Nubarashen landfill site has been in operation since the 1950s. Covering an area of 52 hectares, it receives between 290,000 and 320,000 tons of household waste each year. The landfill was never designed or constructed according to any recognized standards and does not comply with international, technical, environmental, or sanitary-hygienic requirements. It serves solely as a dumping site for waste accumulation.
