Active firefighting operations are underway in the forested areas adjacent to the Dilijan bends in Tavush region, as well as near “Mountainous Armenia” hotel in Dilijan and the pasturelands of Navur. The fire in the Kazanchi area has been isolated, as Narek Sargsyan, Press Secretary of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia, stated in his interview with 1in.am.
Around 700 rescue service personnel, eco-rangers, local residents, and police officers are involved in the firefighting efforts. A helicopter from the Ministry of Defense is also being used. According to Sargsyan, the situation is fully under the control of the rescue service, there is currently no need for volunteers, and the available equipment is sufficient.
When asked about the cause of the fires, Sargsyan responded: “The main reason is noted as the dry climate, which is causing fires not only in Armenia but across the region.”
President of “EcoLur” Informational NGO, Inga Zarafyan, told 1in.am: “There are many dried-out areas in our forests that are not covered with trees, and in many places water sources have dried up. Even the smallest incident can trigger a major disaster. Unfortunately, people in the regions behave in the forests the same way they do in their gardens-burning dry leaves and grass. They may throw a burning cigarette or take other dangerous actions, even unintentionally.” Zarafyan emphasized the need to strengthen the technical capacity of the rescue service and improve the monitoring system.
