Residents of the villages of Surenavan and Armash have sent an alarm signal to EcoLur raising concerns about air pollution and its impact on their health.
The residents' letter states:
"The residents of Surenavan and Armash villages express serious concern about the recent deterioration in air quality. Every morning, between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. as well as late in the evening and during the night, large amounts of toxic smoke rise from the area adjacent to the Zod Bridge and spread toward the nearby settlements.
As a result, breathing has become difficult in Surenavan village. Some residents have developed respiratory and skin-related health problems. People, including children, are forced to breathe polluted air, posing a serious threat to public health.
The residents of Surenavan demand that the issue receive immediate attention and that appropriate measures be taken without delay. The right to breathe clean air is a fundamental human right, and no community should be deprived of that right.
This raises the question: Who is responsible for the health of the residents, and why is a situation that endangers the health of people and their children being allowed to continue?
We would like to remind the authorities that Surenavan and Armash villages are well known for their agricultural production. The state should not only promote agricultural development but also ensure healthy and safe living conditions for the residents of these communities.
If the air pollution continues, the risk of cardiovascular, respiratory, and chronic lung diseases may increase. Therefore, it is essential to carry out independent monitoring without delay, identify the source and causes of the smoke, assess its impact on public health, and present clear findings to the public.
The residents of Surenavan no longer want to breathe toxic smoke. They demand the immediate intervention of the responsible authorities, the provision of a healthy environment, and practical measures to protect their own health and that of their children."
EcoLur has forwarded the alert to the Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body of the Republic of Armenia.
