80% of Armenia is exposed to desertification, while around 30% of the area is under the hazard of desertification, as land specialist Ashot Khoyetsyan beat an alarm signal in his meeting with journalists today. Under him, most Ararat valley is exposed to desertification, and people gradually lose their fertile land areas. Under him, the steps taken by our state to combat desertification fall behind the rate of desertification and soil degradation. Under the specialist, soil desertification and degradation will lead to starvation, “We are losing the significant part of our fertile land areas and the desert land areas already can’t give any harvest and supply food for population,” he said. The land specialist mentioned that Armenia holds a rather high place in the list of the countries exposed to desertification.

Ashot Khoyetsyan also said that Ararat Valley faces water logging and salination. The specialists insists that improper soil management also leads to desertification, “For example, on one hand, fish farms are a good business, but on the other hand they promote soil desertification, and today we are experiencing a disastrous situation with the increase in the groundwater.”
