Goght Residents Blocked Goght Yerevan Road: Demanding To Stop Geghardalitch Gravity Irrigation System Project

Today, on 3 June, Goght residents, Kotayq Region, has blocked Goght-Yerevan road, and Garni residents have joined them. The residents are demanding to stop Geghardalitch Gravity Irrigation System Project. According to the official information, Geghardalitch Gravity Irrigation System project plans to take water from Geghardalitch reservoir through pipelines to supply water from Azat reservoir to Dzoraghbyur, Voghjaberd communities, a part of Geghadir village and Jrvezh summer houses in Kotayq Region. During the project implementation the mentioned communities will receive water from the reservoir in gravity system with pumping stations from Azat River. Goght residents are claiming that the water of the  Geghardalitch for the certain areas in hatsavan, Lanjazat and Garni, where some tycoons have seized areas and planted orchards.

Goght residents are claiming that they will be left without water as a result of the project implementation.

As Garni resident, activist Arusyak Ayvazyan told in her phone interview with EcoLur, Goght residents promised to give water to Goght from Gilanlar Tributary to Azat River, which generates from snow melting and flows through «Khosrov Forest» State Reserve. "If this project is oimplemented, it will make Khosrov forest and Azat Gorge a desert."
