SHPs on Meghri River May Lead to Destruction of Bees and Orchards

Nine SHPs should be constructed on the Meghri River реке. Each SHP takes water from the river, on average, in the distance of 4 km. Taking into consideration the interim distance, the river basin of the Meghri in a distance of 38 km is exposed to the impact of SHPs. In this way, the landscape of Arevik Park, the territory of which is partially included in the basin of the Meghri River, will be destroyed. But this time it’s not all.

“I know that 9 SHPs should be constructed on the Mehgri River. I do think this will have disastrous consequences. The water will get into the pipes in a distance of 38 km. There won’t be any water left in the river and our lands will become deserted…We will also experience problems with bees. Our fruit trees are pollinated by bees, but bees don’t fly where tension is high. We will stay without bees and our gardens will dry out,” said one of Meghri activists in the conversation with EcoLur.

For our part it should be mentioned that the consideration of the draft governmental decision about the change of land areas for the construction of SHPs at the governmental meeting in March 2012, Nature Protection Ministry issued its negative opinion making a reference to the governmental decision on setting up Arevik Park. By this very decision the national park, as a specially protected area, should have protection regime from such activities, which may cause damage to ecosystem. But the government didn’t take into consideration the ministry’s warning, as all the specially protected areas are under its protectorate and changed the category of the land areas.
