World Wetlands Day Marked on 2 February

February 2 is World Wetlands Day. On August 30, 2021, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing February 2 as World Wetlands Day. On that day in 1971, the Ramsar Convention "On Wetlands of International Importance, Especially as Waterfowl Habitats" was adopted in Ramsar, Iran.

Wetlands include swamps, rivers, lakes, coastal areas with salt marshes, underwater seagrass, as well as man-made objects, etc.

This year's theme underscores the need for sustainable use of wetland conservation for human health аnd the planet.

The most important wetland in Armenia is Lake Sevan, which is of strategic importance for our country. To protect the lake and to save it from swamping, it is necessary to raise the level of the lake, not to pollute it and not to catch fish from the lake. It should be noted this year, 2022, greeted Lake Sevan with a negative balance, 10 m lower than the year-end level of the previous year.

The decline in the level of the lake is due to the additional water intake, as well as the lack of water and evaporation of the rivers flowing into the lake. As of February 1, the level of the lake has dropped even more, to 1900.38 meters, which is 14 cm lower than the same date last year.
