Because of High Temperatures ANPP Could Not Operate at Full Swing

As a result of the re-equipment, the installed capacity of the Armenian nuclear power plant was increased to 440 MW. However, ANPP could not work at full capacity during the summer months. "In February-March 2022, the plant developed this capacity, then during the daytime hours of July-August, the plant's capacity did not exceed 390MW due to the high temperature conditions in those months, thus failing the outcomes of re-equipment," the draft of RA government decision "Climate Change Adaptation Program in the Energy Sector and On Approving Action Plan for 2023-2027" says, which is posted on the website www.e-draft.am.

In order to adapt to climate change, the development of engineering solutions for increasing the efficiency of the cooling system of ANPP is mentioned as a "high" priority in the document. "As the monitoring results of the last 20 years show, an unprecedented intensification of heat waves has been registered in the Republic," the document states.

According to the document, RA Ministry of Territorial Management and Infrastructure and Atomic Energy Safety Council should implement engineering solutions for increasing the efficiency of ANPP cooling system in the 1st quarter of 2026. The cost of this operation is estimated at 78,000,000 AMD. Funding is not planned from RA state budget, sources not prohibited by legislation, international donor organizations are indicated as sources.
