For the first time, researchers of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA studied the role of cyanobacterial akinetes in the ecosystem of Lake Sevan.
"It turned out that these cyanobacteria hibernating in the bottom sediments can replenish the cyanobacterial composition in the water environment under appropriate conditions. The results of the research showed that there are significantly more akinetes in the bottom sediments of the Great Sevan compared to the Little Sevan," said Gor Gevorgyan, Head of Applied Hydroecology Laboratory of Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA. He mentioned that the akinete research in Lake Sevan fills the fundamental gaps in the hydrobiological data of the lake with almost a century of history.
