Problem with Urmia Lake Makes Iran Hurry with Construction of Meghri HPP

Iranian president Ahmadinejad proposed at the parliament to take water from Nakhijevan reservoir. Prevention of   dessication of Urmia Lake became an environmental and political problem for Iran. Protest demonstrations are held in Iran demanding to solve this problem.  President Ahmadinejad is often accused in case the lake dries out, the Azeri population living on that area will have to leave their settlements. In order to avoid these allegations, still in July 2012 Deputy Nader Kazipour stated that the President assigned to work out a program on using Araks river water from the reservoir to fill in the Urmia. Here there is another problem, as the reservoir was constructed in 1970 and the activity is regulated with the agreements with the former USSR.

At present Iran is running negotiation with Azerbaijan in regard with the reservoir. Even if any arrangements are achieved, most probable water will be insufficient to solve the problem of the Urmia Lake. That’s why, as an alternative Iran may use Meghri HPP as well.

Reminder: the Urmia Lake is dessicated at extremely high rates and the soil concentration made up 330 gr per one liter. Space observations show that the lake reduces twice as quickly as it used to before.
