Alaverdi Copper Mine – Hazard Category 3

As of 01.01.2010, Alaverdi copper mine had 1168.28 tons of ore, out of which copper – 62065.9 tons. At the same time, the amount of gold made up 140.2 kg, silver – 7.3 tons, bismuth – 245.3 tons, selenium – 60.87 tons, tellurium - 98.02 tons, pyrite - 303921 tons, sulfur – 225086 tons, and iron – 196030 tons.
The mine is located 3 km north from Alaverdi Town, and it hasn’t been developed since 2008.
These data are taken from the book by Hrachya Avagyan, Chief Specialist at the Institute of Economics of NAS RA, Dr in Geological Sciences, entitled “Ways and Prospects of Mining and Metallurgical Industries in the Republic of Armenia” (Yerevan 2011, “Gitutyun” Publishing House, Institute of Economics of NAS RA).
Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, the mine hazard category is 3, i.e. caused disastrous condition to human health and environment due to copper and sulfur.
Under the official information provided by Energy and Natural Resources Ministry, as of 01.07.2013 the right to soil management of Alaverdi copper mine for mining has been issued to “Armenian Copper Program” CJSC, a part of “Vallex” Group Company.
