Debed River Pollution and Excessive Concentration of Sulfur Dioxide in Atmosphere Caused Disastrous Condition in Alaverdi Town in 2011
EcoLur
The pollution of Debed River and the excessive concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere caused a disastrous condition in Alaverdi Town in 2011. Under the annual report by “Environmental Impact Monitoring Center” SNCO for 2012, the average annual concentration of sulfur dioxide exceeded the MPC by 3.3 times. The maximum concentration of sulfur dioxide, 2.918 mg/m3, was observed on 17 January, at 03:30 a.m., that of nitrogen dioxide, 0.054 mg/m3, at 12:40 p.m. on 9 December.
In the samples taken from Debed River Basin the average annual concentration of aluminum exceeded MPC by up to 8.8 times, vanadium – 6.0, and copper – 11.0 times. Thus, on a yearly basis the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere made up 0.165 μg/m3, which is near to standards under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model. Nevertheless, under the model, the maximum concentration of sulfur dioxide caused a disastrous condition for human health. In regard with water resources, the concentration of aluminum in Debed River basin made up 352 μg/l, vanadium - 60 μg/l, and copper - 110 μg/l. Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, the excessive concentration of copper caused the disastrous condition in Debed.
