Aysas River in Disastrous Situation

EcoLur

The Aysas River is the right tributary to the Karakaya River (the Karakaya River is a tributary to the Yeghegis River) and flows in Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia. Its length is 12 km, the catchment area is 33.2 sq. km. It flows into the Karakaya River.

As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, “Hermon” SHPP is constructed on this river, which is operated by “Elegis HPP” LLC, derivation length -3720 meters.

It should also be mentioned that “AratesEnergy” LLC is planning to construct “Nane” SHPP on the Aysas River, the derivation length of which is 2726 meters, as the project for “Nane” SHPP says. Its public hearings were held in Hermon Village, Vayots Dzor Region, on 19 March 2013 and the villagers supported this project, as it creates 8 working places. If this SHPP is operated, a total river area of 5996 meters will be piped, which will make up 49.966667% of the river – a disastrous situation for the river.
