Vararak River (Goris River) in Crisis

EcoLur

Vararak River (Goris River) flows in Syunik Region. It’s one of the tributaries to the Vorotan River. It rises from Syunik highland – south-east slope of Mets Ishkhanasar, flows to south through Goris Town and south-east from Qarahunj Village towards NKR territory and joins the Vorotan on the left. Its length is 29 km.  

As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, the following SHPPs are constructed on this river:

  1. “Vararakn” SHPP operated by “Kh&M Friends” LLC, derivation length – 2263 meters,
  2. “Qarahunj” SHPP operated by “QARAHUNJ” LLC, derivation length – 1740.0 meters, 1224.0 meters
  3. “V.A.L.” SHPP operated by “V.A.L. ENERGI” LLC, derivation length – 580.7 meters.

The SHPPs pipe a total river area of 5807.7 meters, which makes up 20.026552% of the river.
