On 29 May 2019, under the resolution of Tavush Regional Head Hayk Chobanyan an ad hoc committee was established in Azatamut Community to examine the activities of charcoal producing workshops and their impact on the environment. As Tavush Regional Municipality informs, within one week the committee will examine the activities of the workshops producing charcoal in Azatamut community, their impact on the environment, consequences, and risks. The committee includes the representatives of Tavush Regional Municipality, Tavush Regional Division of Environmental and Mining Inspection Body, “Eco House and Camp” NGO and Tavush Branch of Disease Control and Prevention National Center of Health Ministry.
Charcoal production emissions in the form of smoke are harmful for human health – the lawfulness of charcoal production is another problem.
Reminder: the verdict of the Public Environmental Court on the violations of forest ecosystem in Armenia demanded from RA Chief Prosecutor to check the lawfulness of charcoal production, realization and export in Armenia, to detect the violations occurring in this sector and to apply relevant measures to eliminate them.
It should be mentioned that only in 2012, according to State Center for Forest Monitoring, Armenia exported 22,620 kg of charcoal.
