Clash of Interests between Mining Industry and Biodiversity and Agriculture in Terms of Amoulsar

Amoulsar is frequently said to be free of any vegetation. Tigranes mine development project of Amoulsar gold mine also mentions no word about flora and fauna. In 2009 the project was assessed positively by expert assessment of Nature protection Ministry of Armenia.

In reality, the surroundings of Amoulsar are rich in flora and fauna.  There are 248 plant species growing in the territory, out of which 6 are registered in the Red Book of Armenia – 60 mammal species, 15 reptile species, 5 amphibians and 5 fish species.

Amoulsar is also a tourist destination: “Persian tourists were admiring with the rich nature here and collected some herbs for them,” the locals told EcoLur.

The herds of local communities pasture in the meadows at Amoulsar foot. The locals give milk to the milk plant which supplies dairy products to Jermuk Resort Town, Yeghegnadzor and Vayq Towns.

When mine development starts, the whole territory will be affected, especially from explosions and dumps that contain heavy metals and toxic elements.

It should also be mentioned there are also apricot orchards, besides cultivated land areas.

The other problem to be emerged because of mine development is the probable pollution of waters. Kechout and Spandaryan water reservoirs are located on both sides of the mine, meanwhile Spandaryan is located in the nearest affected zone – nearby Gor Hayq Village. The water flows from Spandaryan, the second largest water reservoir, through Arva-Vorotan Tunnel to Kechout water reservoir, from there it flows to Lake Sevan through Arpa-Sevan Tunnel.

Reminder: the license for opencast development of this mine is issued to “Lydian International” Company represented by “Goeteam” subsidiary. The project is funded by International Financial Corporation (IFC) European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the shareholder of “Lydian International”.
