Lake Sevan fish reserves have reduced: Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA Bardukh Gabrielyan conditions it with overfishing, the poor state of the rivers flowing into Lake Sevan and elimination of fish spawning sites.
'There are 28 rivers flowing into Lake Sevan, out of which 9 rivers are main spawning sites, nevertheless, so far no river has relevant conditions, where endemic fish species can spawn. Reasons are different such as uncontrolled water intake, river pollution, change in the riverbeds, SHPP impact and other different obstacles,' Bardukh Gabrielyan said.
Recover of trout reserves in Lake Sevan is an urgent issue: we should preserve the broodstock and young fish so as to receive the natural reproduction, nevertheless, young and big fish are poached so they don't manage to give generation.
Relevant works are carried out for the recovery of the trout population: we managed to recover the genome of the trout species. Currently, works are being carried out to recover the winter bakhtak,' Bardukh Gabrielyan said.
Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA has proposed RA Nature Protection Ministry to carry out the recovery of Sevan Khramulya in the lake.
'The recovery of Sevan Khramulya in Lake Sevan, is, first of all, conditioned with its ecological significance, as this fish species mainly feeds with bottom organic substances and, in this way, we can remove the organic substances from the lake.
Speaking about the crawfish reserves, the expert highlighted the reduction in its reserves in the lake. 'To some extent, we have reserves of the whitefish increased in the lake, nevertheless, it hasn't reached the border of 1000 tons yet so as to be illegible for fishing. Increase in whitefish reserves is conditioned with the increase in young fish reserves and ensuring natural reproduction of the fish in its spawning period. It should be noted that at the beginning of the 90s the maximum biomass of the whitefish was 30,000 tons, while now its reserves are assessed over 2000 tons,' Bardukh Gabrielyan.
