In 2020, a total of 205,946 kg of fish were reared in Lake Sevan, for which 192,311 kg of feed was poured into the lake. According to RA Environment Ministry, the death of fish in the net cage farm belonging to "Sevan Aqua" CJSC was 20,001 kg. It should be noted that the nets are located in Lake Sevan within the framework of "Comprehensive Program for Restoration of Trout Reserves and Development of Fisheries in Lake Sevan", whereas 9 billion AMD have been allocated from the state budget for its implementation.
The project estimated to grow up to 50,000 tons of fish in cage nets by 2024 and to pour the same amount of feed containing phosphorus and nitrogen into the lake. The environmental community opposed the project, saying it would lead to severe pollution of the lake due to infectious diseases of fish farmed in the cage nets and antibiotics.
The results of "SevaMod" project, jointly implemented by Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Magdeburg, Germany, published in 2019 by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, proved the fear of environmentalists. According to the results, the concentrations of phosphorus contributing to the swamping of the lake in the area of the nets in Sevan were higher than in other areas. The project is currently being implemented on a small scale.
