Use of Wild Animals in Circuses Banned

On March 23, 2022, RA National Assembly adopted in the second reading the draft law submitted by RA Government, which proposes to ban the use of wild animal species in circuses included in the list approved by the authorized body.

60 deputies voted in favor of the package of draft laws on making amendments to RA Law on Fauna, 27 MPs abstained.

The adoption of the draft law received a positive response from the animal lovers and the society. However, the issue of operating the building of Yerevan State Circus was raised again. The circus building has been in a state of emergency since 2011, it was blown up in 2012 to have a new building. After that, the opening period of the new circus building has been extended for about ten years. Among the reasons for the change in the construction schedule was the coronavirus in 2020, on the other hand, the process of importing some equipment was delayed.

Today, the circus artists do not have a clear answer as to when the circus will open its doors to the audience. The chief director of the circus, zoologist Naira Petrosyan mentioned in her conversation with EcoLur that the renovation of the circus building is not over yet. Naira Petrosyan is a supporter of the bill banning the use of wild animals in the circus. According to her, this will allow artists to specialize in other genres.
