Reservoirs in Armenia can serve as an alternative source of fish farming development. This is Samvel Pipoyan’s opinion, who is the Head of Biology, Chemistry and Teaching Methodology Department at Armenian State Pedagogical University named after Kh. Abovyan, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Professor.
Out of 82 existing reservoirs in Armenia, 30-32 are of large and medium size. "It is very important to consider these reservoirs not only from the point of view of agriculture and hydropower, but also that they can simultaneously serve the development of fish farming. If Sevan gives approximately 2-3 thousand tons of whitefish per year, according to my preliminary calculations, the reservoirs of Armenia can also give approximately that much, moreover, ecologically clean fish," Samvel Pipoyan said.
According to Samvel Pipoyan, the only risk is poaching. "At low water, it becomes easier to catch big fish. However, if the guard service of reservoirs is instructed to ensure that there is no poaching, we will not experience that problem," he said.
