On June 5, the world celebrates World Environment Day. On June 5, 1972, the Stockholm conference on environmental issues began its work. This date was also selected by the United Nations to mark the annual World Environment Day. During the same conference, it was decided to create the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). June 5 is the world's main environmental holiday, and in 2004 in Armenia it is also celebrated as Environmentalist's Day.
This year's theme for World Environment Day is "Fight Plastic Pollution". 2023 The host country of the event is the African Republic of Ivory Coast.
According to the official website of the United Nations, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced annually in the world, half of which is intended for single use. Less than 10% of these are recycled. Around 19-23 million tons of plastic end up in lakes, rivers and seas every year.
About 11 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the oceans every year. In 2040, this indicator may triple.
A video has been published on the official website of World Environment Day calling on governments and businesses to take clear steps, make commitments and introduce new standards to reduce and recycle plastic.
6,000 tons of plastic waste is generated in Armenia annually, out of which only 25 percent is recycled.
