The “ECOserve Closing and the Way Ahead: For People and Nature” event took place

On the 27th of November “ECOserve Closing and the Way Ahead: For People and Nature” event took place and aimed to present the six years of work carried out under the “Management of Natural Resources and Safeguarding of Ecosystem Services for Sustainable Rural Development in the South Caucasus” (ECOserve Armenia) programme.

The programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has supported the Government of Armenia in improving the preconditions for sustainable and biodiversity-friendly use of pastures and grasslands, with particular attention to the energy security of the rural population.

M. Madeleine Rauschenberger, GIZ Armenia Country Director, remarked: “Today, as we conclude the ECOserve programme, I want to emphasise that it is of utmost importance that the solutions proposed for the sustainable management and conservation of Armenia’s natural resources and biodiversity remain on the agenda, and that our Government partners continue to pursue them. By closing this important programme, which could not have been implemented without the comprehensive support of our partner ministries, we are opening the door to new programmes that GIZ Armenia is carrying out in this country, offering citizens a sustainable future through environmental protection.”

The event featured welcoming remarks by Vache Terteryan, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, and Aram Meymaryan, Deputy Minister of Environment, who highlighted the importance of the programme's components for local communities and the significance of implementing environmental programmes from the perspective of sustainable development.

As a regional Programme, ECOserve was carried out from 2018 to 2023 in the countries of the South Caucasus region. Since March 2023, the Programme has continued only in Armenia. The “Environmental Protection of Lake Sevan” (EU4Sevan) and “EU for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Armenian Communities” (EU4EE) programmes, which are part of BMZ commissioned ECOserve programme, are co-financed by the European Union and will continue until 2025.
