March 3: We Celebrate World Wildlife Day

March 3 is observed worldwide as World Wildlife Day. The decision to mark this day was adopted on December 20, 2013, at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. The date selection is associated with the adoption of "Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora" on March 3, 1973.

The theme for 2025 is "Financing Wildlife Conservation: Investments for People and Planet." This theme emphasizes how we can work together to create more effective and sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure a viable future for both people and our planet.

According to the UN official website, today over 1 million animal species face the threat of extinction and are confronting a triple planetary crisis. Around the world, billions of people depend on more than 50 thousand wild animal and plant species.

More than half of the world's gross domestic product is connected to nature in one way or another, so the loss of biodiversity poses a serious threat to financial stability. Investments in biodiversity conservation amount to 143 billion dollars, whereas approximately 824 billion dollars are needed annually.

Armenia is located in one of the richest biodiversity eco-regions on Earth. More than 3500 species of higher vascular plants and 17500 animal species, including 536 species of vertebrates, can be found in Armenia's territory.
