Armenian Government Imposes 6-Month Ban on Export of Whitefish Roe

The Government of Armenia has introduced a six-month ban on the export of whitefish (sig) roe from the country.

According to the decision, the process of regulating commercial fishing of whitefish in Lake Sevan has led to a noticeable increase in the species' biomass in recent years:

* 2019 – 2,668 tons
* 2020 – 2,345 tons
* 2021 – 5,348 tons
* 2022 – 4,700 tons
* 2023 – 3,974 tons

This growth has made it possible to resume commercial fishing of whitefish in Lake Sevan, with the following annual quotas:

* 2020 – 300 tons
* 2021 – 300 tons
* 2022 – 600 tons
* 2023 – 600 tons
* 2024 – 679 tons
* 2025 – 314 tons (as of June 1)

However, despite the upward trend in whitefish biomass, the current figures still do not ensure the species stable natural reproduction and optimal population levels in the lake. According to certain scientific data, this would require a total stock of up to 10,000 tons, with a sustainable commercial catch of approximately 2,000 tons or more.
