A discussion in Yerevan focused on integrating gender equality into the management of specially protected nature areas and agrobiodiversity. The discussion centered on women’s role in biodiversity conservation, community governance, and sustainable agriculture.
Emma Anakhasyan, an expert at the Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment NGO, noted that women possess knowledge and experience related to local ecological species in their communities, as well as their use and management.
Gender equality is emphasized in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The issue is also addressed in Armenia’s national biodiversity conservation program.
The document envisages ensuring gender-balanced decision-making by 2030 and promoting women’s leadership and representation in biodiversity conservation.
During the meeting, the following recommendation was presented: to regularly conduct gender analyses in order to identify systemic inequalities in access to land, resources, decision-making, and benefits.
