Hambardzum Matevosyan, Environment Minister of the Republic of Armenia, has outlined how Armenia is preparing for the 17th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD):
"As the President of COP17, we are preparing for the Conference based on the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, and shared responsibility, with the vision of delivering tangible results for biodiversity. COP17 will convene at a critical moment, serving both as a platform to assess the progress achieved to date and to identify the remaining challenges and gaps. It will also play a pivotal role in charting the course towards the full implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by 2030, transforming ambition into concrete and effective action.
As 2026 is a 'triple COP' year, we have a unique opportunity to ensure genuine and practical synergies among the three Rio Conventions, as well as other multilateral environmental agreements, while fully respecting their respective mandates and areas of implementation. In addition to the Leaders' Summit, which is intended to strengthen global political commitment to biodiversity conservation, Armenia will also host the High-Level Ministerial Segment of the COP17 negotiations on 27–28 October. This ministerial meeting will provide additional political momentum at a decisive stage of the negotiations. We view COP17 as a turning point-from commitments to implementation, from ambition to tangible results-and as an opportunity to accelerate the achievement of global biodiversity goals. It is at COP17 that the international community will come together to 'Act for Nature', transforming the vision of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into concrete and measurable progress."
