Community consultations play an important role in the preparations for the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), to be held in Armenia in October. They contribute to identifying existing issues, challenges and opportunities in the field of nature conservation.
To this end, on July 27, EcoLur Informational NGO held an awareness-raising meeting at the Dilijan Aarhus Centre. The meeting was attended by EcoLur team, representatives of Dilijan Municipality staff, members of the local active civil society and residents.
The visit to Dilijan provided an opportunity to learn about the biodiversity features of the region, local issues, and the role that the community can play in the international nature conservation agenda.
Dilijan is one of the areas of Armenia where natural ecosystems are closely linked to the daily lives of communities, tourism and local development. The territory of Dilijan National Park protects rich forest ecosystems and numerous plant and animal species.
During the meeting, participants discussed how local residents, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders can participate in COP17.
Vice President of EcoLur Informational NGO Victoria Burnazyan presented the main objectives of COP17 and the targets of Armenia’s national biodiversity conservation programme, and spoke about the role of Dilijan as a community surrounded by rich biodiversity. She also highlighted the provisions relevant to Dilijan Municipality in terms of implementing the targets of the biodiversity conservation programme.
The meeting was held within the framework of “Supporting Armenia's CBD COP Presidency and Domestic Implementation” project implemented by EcoLur Informational NGO in cooperation with Fridtjof Nansen Institute and with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
