Despite the objections of the environmental society the Government doesn’t refuse from the idea to develop tourism in specially protected caves in Vayots Dzor. The Government has taken out a loan of US $ 55 million from the EBRD, a part of which will be directed to the establishment of infrastructures for the development of tourism in Mozrov and Magel caves. This decision was made on 9 June. It’s planned to construct info centers, cafes, public restrooms, safe parking lots and to construct roads and to lay lighting.
It’s unclear how the safety of the tourists should be ensured, if there is danger of cave destruction in the entrance part, and if enhancement works are carried out in the caves, whether it won’t affect on the internal world of the caves.
Five red-listed bats inhabit in Magel Cave, while human activities caused 60-70% of bat population reduction. Mozrov cave has numerous beautiful cave formations: in the years of independence people had free-of-obstacle access to the cave under the absence of any control, broke and stole formation stones, while the aid and dust having penetrated into the cave had changes the appearance of the cave formations and changed the local climate. If the cave is not preserved in proper manner, the café formations having generated thousand years ago, can be destructed entirely.
