“The call of Sevan” - Eco education theatrical performance

On October 20, in Yerevan Basic School N 194, the “Call of Sevan” eco-education theatrical performance, aimed to raise awareness of the environmental issues of Lake Sevan, foster behavior changes, and encourage the young population of Armenia to restore Sevan Lake's ecosystem, took place.

The scenario was developed by the theatre youth group of "Areguni" NGO with the expert support of the EU4Sevan project and “Environment and Health” NGO.

The theatrical performance was successfully staged 19 times in 18 settlements of the Gegharkunik region, attracting the attention and sympathy of more than 4000 young spectators. The play is performed by the students of Chambarak city, who, through songs and staging, introduce the young audience to the ecological issues of Lake Sevan. The last performance within the frames of the “Friends of Sevan” project is planned to be conducted in Yerevan, inviting school children from Yerevan schools.

In her welcome speech Sonia Lopez Lopez, Cooperation Officer of EUD to Armenia, welcomed the participants and highlighted the strategic, economic, and social importance, as well as historical-cultural, recreational, scientific, and spiritual value of Lake Sevan for Armenia. Ms. Lopez also talked about the ecological challenges that Lake Sevan faces, noting that a low level of public awareness and access to information has a significant role in the chain of those challenges. She highlighted the importance of raising awareness and facilitating knowledge exchange related to protecting Lake Sevan among children, youth, resource users, communities, and the private sector.

In his speech, EU4Sevan Team Leader Christian Henschel thanked the attendees for their participation, emphasized the role of active participation of young people in raising awareness and behavioral change, and expressed hope that each of the attendees will contribute to the conservation and protection of Lake Sevan ecosystem in the future with their words and deeds.

The theatrical performance is part of the "Friends of Sevan" initiative, implemented within the framework of the EU4Sevan project, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as a part of the “ECOserve” programme, and UNDP and co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
