The urgent priority for Yerevan Municipality is the immediate conservation of the Nubarashen Landfill Site. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan stated this at a press conference held on September 15. According to the Mayor, the Nubarashen Landfill Site continues to pose a serious environmental problem, especially during hot summer days due to frequent ignitions.
The Municipality of Yerevan is working on addressing the issue of waste recycling and is moving forward in two directions simultaneously: discussions are underway with international partners on institutional solutions, while in parallel, a two-stage tender is being planned with the involvement of the private sector to select the best recycling model. “When we talk about the costs of a recycling plant, we must understand that waste itself has a certain value, and whoever can present the best proposal can win in such a program. We understand which recycling option is best for the city, and which can also be acceptable to the Government of Armenia and the Public Services Regulatory Commission,” Avinyan said.
The Mayor also noted that the Municipality has received numerous proposals from major international waste recycling companies that are offering their management models.
To improve the quality of waste collection, the Municipality is renewing its fleet of equipment: 12 new German-made vacuum sweepers have already been acquired, and the delivery of 15 new garbage trucks is underway. “We no longer operate with the logic of exhausting and losing equipment—we are now updating it regularly every year,” the Mayor emphasized.
