Akunk, Arzni, Garni and Jrvezh Communities Join “Kotayk and Gegharkunik Solid Waste Management Project”

The communities of Akunk, Arzni, Garni and Jrvezh in Kotayk Region, Armenia, have been included in “Kotayk and Gegharkunik Solid Waste Management Project,” in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the Government of the Republic of Armenia.

Previously, the Project covered the following communities: Abovyan, Byureghavan, Tsaghkadzor, Hrazdan, Nor Hachn, Nairi (including the former Yeghvard urban community), Charentsavan in Kotayk Region, and Gavar, Martuni, Chambarak, Sevan and Vardenis in Gegharkunik Region.

Within the framework of the Project, a new sanitary landfill has been constructed in Hrazdan community, along with waste transfer stations in Martuni and Akunk settlements, serving the above-mentioned communities.

It should be recalled that in 2016, a €5,500,000 loan agreement was signed between the Republic of Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the implementation of “Kotayk and Gegharkunik Solid Waste Management Project.” In 2017, two grant agreements were signed - one with the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform in the amount of €3,500,000 and another with the E5P Regional Fund in the amount of €2,000,000.

Under the agreements, 12 urban communities from the two Regions established “Kotayk and Gegharkunik Solid Municipal Waste Management” LLC. The urban communities also signed a Project Support Agreement with the EBRD.

In 2025, amendments were made to the company’s articles of association and the newly included communities have also become shareholders.
