Reservoirs in Armenia Have Low Fullness Despite Precipitations in March

As of April 19, water filling in 5 major reservoirs of Armenia is 37.64 million cubic meters less than on the same day last year. According to RA Environment Ministry "Hydrometeorological Monitoring Center" SNCO, the volume of water in Akhuryan Reservoir is less by 13.91 million cubic meters, in Lake Arpi Reservoir - by 10.70 million cubic meters, in Azat Reservoir - by 9.17 million cubic meters, in Marmarik Reservoir - 0.76 million cubic meters, in Aparan reservoir - 3.10 million cubic meters.

It is necessary for precipitation not to decrease the temperature, so that the water resulting from the snowmelt is poured into the reservoir, otherwise the snowmelt occurs gradually, and the water is absorbed into the soil without causing a surface flow.

Precipitation in Armenia in April is less than the norm compared to March. "At the moment, 30-50% of the precipitation norm has fallen in the country, and no serious precipitation is expected in the coming days," Gagik Surenyan said, SNCO Deputy Director.

If we do not have enough water in the reservoirs, the issue of additional water intake from Lake Sevan will arise again. As of April 19, the level of Lake Sevan is 22 cm lower than the level of the same day last year. The level of the lake was 1900.70 m on the same day last year. Climate change is having a negative impact, not only on reservoir flooding, but also on the Lake Sevak ecosystem. Extra water intake puts a lot of pressure on the lake. In order to restore the ecological balance of the lake, it is necessary to raise the level of the lake, which has not been possible in recent years.
